LGBTQ+ Rights and Understanding

1. Is being LGBTQ+ legal in the Philippines?

Yes. Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or LGBTQ+ is not itself a crime in the Philippines. Consensual same-sex sexual activity between adults is not generally criminalized.

However, legal recognition and protection are different issues. Same-sex marriage is not currently legally recognized, and comprehensive nationwide protection against all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity remains an area of ongoing legislative debate. Some local governments have adopted their own anti-discrimination measures.

Laws and policies may change. For specific legal concerns, consult a qualified legal professional or an appropriate government office.

2. Is being LGBTQ+ a sin?

People and religious traditions have different beliefs about sexuality and gender. There is no single answer that represents every religion or every believer.

Being LGBTQ+ is part of human diversity and does not make a person less deserving of dignity, kindness, or respect. No one should be subjected to bullying, humiliation, or violence because of who they are.

LGBT KABSAT- GATTARAN encourages respectful conversations and compassion, even when people hold different personal or religious beliefs.

3. Does being LGBTQ+ conflict with my religion?

This can be a personal and sensitive question. Religious communities interpret their teachings about sexuality and gender in different ways. Some are affirming and welcoming of LGBTQ+ people, while others hold more traditional views.

Being LGBTQ+ does not automatically mean that you must abandon your faith. Many LGBTQ+ people maintain meaningful religious or spiritual lives. You may wish to speak with a trusted, respectful religious leader or counselor who will listen without shaming or pressuring you.

Our organization respects people's freedom of belief and encourages understanding, safety, and mutual respect.

4. What does LGBTQ+ mean?

LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term that includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning people, along with other identities represented by the plus sign.

Sexual orientation describes whom a person may feel romantically, emotionally, or sexually attracted to. Gender identity refers to a person's inner understanding of their own gender. These are different aspects of a person's identity.

5. What should I do if I experience discrimination or bullying?

Your safety and well-being matter. If it is safe to do so, consider reaching out to someone you trust, documenting what happened, or seeking assistance from an appropriate community support service or government office.

If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. You may also contact our organization to ask about available support and appropriate referral options.
